Some moments remind us that a community is built not only with words, but with action. On July 25, Winston-Salem was the setting for one of those special moments.
For the fourth consecutive year, Mía Magazine hosted “Back to School with Mía,” a community event that brought together families, businesses, organizations, agencies, and volunteers with one shared goal: helping our students start the new school year with excitement and the tools they need to succeed.
Because when it comes to our children, our community shows up.
More Than 1,700 Backpacks, Thousands of Smiles
This year, more than 1,700 backpacks were distributed to students in our community, thanks to the generosity of businesses, agencies, organizations, sponsors, and Mía Magazine clients who came together to make this possible.
But every backpack represented much more than school supplies.
It represented someone who chose to give, a volunteer who arrived early to help, and a business or organization that wanted to make a difference. Most importantly, it sent a message to our children: there is a community that believes in you.
In addition to supporting the backpack giveaway, many participants provided valuable information and resources to local families.
Four Years of Building Community
When Mía Magazine launched this initiative, the goal was simple: to create a space where families could receive support during the back-to-school season and connect with organizations that serve our community year-round.
Four years later, Back to School with Mía has become a celebration that our community looks forward to every summer.

Because ultimately, Back to School with Mía is about much more than giving away backpacks. It is about showing what we can accomplish when we come together for our children.
Every backpack carried school supplies, but it also carried solidarity, hope, and dreams.
